Phase 2
SEL
Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children acquire and apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage their emotions. These characteristics will show themselves in the child's empathy for others, his or her decision making and maintaining positive relationships.
Managing our emotions is a lifelong pursuit! The five elements we will focus on every day in the classroom are: Self-awareness, Self-management, Social awareness, Relationship skills and Responsible decision making.
Self-awareness is conscious knowledge of your own character, feelings, motives, and desires. It is having a clear perception of your personality, including strengths, weaknesses, thoughts, beliefs, motivation, and emotions. Self-Awareness allows you to understand other people, how they perceive you, your attitude and your responses to them in the moment.
Self-management is taking responsibility for one's own behavior and well-being. An important element in self-management is regulation. A student needs to develop self-monitoring, controlling and directing aspects of their behavior and learning. In order for this to work a student’s needs to monitor evaluate and reinforce his behavior and learning continuously.
Social awareness is the ability to recognize another person's thoughts and feelings, predict and understand another's behaviors based on the perception of another's mental state. Developing social awareness makes the students able to understand and empathize with others.
Relationship skills is the ability to get along with others while getting the job done. To sharpen relationship skills a student first needs to develop listening, communication and positive attitude skills in order to have a strong foundation to stand on.
Responsible decision making involves having clear values which help in making sound judgments. Responsible decision making forces the student to use his or her social and emotional knowledge to weigh out the impact of their decisions. In order to make a responsible decision the students should always ask themselves how will this choice affect me and others.
