If I could start again I would have successful professionals come in and talk about the significance that SEL has had on their careers and family life. Hearing this I believe would have a greater impact on the students to develop social emotional skills in order to be successful just like the speakers. I would also show more motivational SEL videos and have maybe more projects like creating SEL motivational posters and hanging them up around the school or creating SEL skits that would be entertaining, practical and memorable.
This semester I would like to see more implementation of SEL. But not only implementation, I would like to see more students mentoring other students in SEL. That kind of engagement is rare, but when you experience it you want to replicated everywhere. SEL skills are paramount at the high school level especially self-awareness and self- management skills in social interactions. These skills are for life they will be used long after the student is finished with his or her formal education. That is why they are so desperately needed in every student.

A real awakening happened when we invited professionals to the classroom to talk about the importance of social emotional learning. Students heard from professionals in the airline business, the manufacturing business, the military, entrepreneurs, etc. Each one said that it was paramount to have these skills in the world of work. To be able to assess and regulate ones emotions at work is vital to getting the job done. They said that your emotional intelligence ultimately decides your destiny. Students heard stories of how important it was to connect to people, how SEL helps solve problems and how important it is in building relationships. Hearing how important SEL is from your teacher is one thing, but to hear it from a panel of professional outside of academia really hits home.
