This I believe
I believe that teaching is a profession that does not get many pats on the back. The pats come when we have what I call magical teaching moments. That is when students are learning, laughing, and you get a wonderful feeling of satisfaction. Our other forms of reward is when we teachers can reach a child who has given up and change him or her to slowly get that spark of understanding and begin to want to learn. That is our award, no fanfare, no glory, but the reward is given by the change that we see. I believe the key to reaching out to each child especially the ones who are desensitized to education is finding out what excites and interests them then exploit that. If done properly an awakening occurs and a new mind begins to want to learn and grow.
I believe every student is a valuable human being that deserves to be treated with respect. I believe that respect is shown when we teachers create a lifelong love of learning for each of our students. I believe that at this time in history we have tremendous power with our technology and if used properly we can teach and reach each of our student’s minds as never before. Yes we also have many hurdles that at times make us want to give up and throw in the towel, but then we watch as our students come into our room and a small comment is made such as “I worked on it almost all night, I think I finally figured it out” or “Thanks for helping me I think I am ready for the presentation” Hearing these comments and seeing them want to learn keeps us going!
I also believe that as teachers we need to instill critical thinking along with social emotional learning. These skills will serve our students well throughout their lives. Independence is the outcome we so desperately want for all our students. That is why I say “I do not teach Computer Science; I teach my students how to learn Computer Science.” This way they will be able to learn anything throughout their life. This I believe.
Sincerely, Laddie Perina
