Phase 6
Throughout my website I have commented on the focus groups, their insights, guidance and constructive criticism, which I have found helpful, insightful and honest. The most important thing I have learned from my colleagues is to not give up and always be humble to learning new ways to teach and inspire.
As far as my teaching demonstrations they have been good trial and error exercises. One can learn a lot from trying new things. But one has to be willing to fail at times in order to succeed.
As far as the book I have chosen Stuck in the Shallow End, I found the book to be insightful in the area of institutional discouragement of African Americans and Latinos in computer science. With the proper encouragement and educational opportunities most of these students would succeed in the course. With the book getting national attention computer science is finally a required class in most high schools. The only issue I see is how to get the student motivated to make it a major in college. One can try motivating the student with money, but there has to be a genuine passion for the discipline. That to me is the next phase, how do we get them to become computer scientists?
As far as my imagineIT I have found that there is a deep need for SEL in our students lives. It is lacking for many reasons. That is why it needs to be taught with a passion, humility and a bit of humor. The results are well worth the effort!
I looking forward to the new challenges coming up. Most of all I am excited to learn new material that is inspiring, practical and insightful.
