ImagineIT Update 2
So far we are on track. I also have encouraged my students to step outside of their comfort zone and see how social emotional learning can be used to help our community. I had some of my students go out and collect food and clean churches. Other students collected toys for children in hospitals. While others helped students, who were handicapped learn to play sports. One of my students spent four days in a teen shelter to learn about teen homelessness along with giving them some hope. SEL starts at home grows in school and touches all parts of life!
The one important factor that stands out for me is the transformation that SEL has had on my students. Managing behavior through all the social complexities and stresses that life can throw at you is daunting. But many of my students are doing just that, managing themselves and being aware of their emotions during troubling times and coping and learning from a menagerie of feelings. To truly find out how SEL has affected them. I had them write a paper on how it has helped them in life. From this assignment I found out their true feelings about SEL. From this I got a personal look at how my students use the management skills that SEL has to offer and its success in the student’s life. Below is an example of how SEL is helping a student get through some hard times in her life.
Emotional Intelligence

The way that social emotional learning has impacted my life on a daily bases is to live day by day. This has helped me to get through my problems in many ways. The reason being is because day by day I go through many problems which I have to deal with. I go through many emotions throughout the day. But I stop and think mentally about how I have to stay calm, and not let anything bring me down or have it get to me. Social Emotional Learning has taught me, and has helped me to think deeper in a positive way. The way I should manage my life, and how careful I have to be with the actions I do. It has also helped me to enjoy life and move on and not stay in a negative place. I try to be positive each day that passes by. I use to see everything dark around me, but now there's always a light at the end on each tunnel. Never give up! I'm aware now of how my actions can affect me and others as well. Also the way that I'm able to help others, for example the relationship I have with my mom. I can talk to her a lot better. SEL helps when I feel that my life is falling apart, or when I'm stressed. I feel I have the ability to think more in a positive way. My thinking skills are improving a lot more. I'm able to identity my feelings, and control them as well. Especially when I'm in a situation where I'm very upset. I understand why things change, and why things go wrong. My life right now might not be the best, because I deal with so much stress at home, at school, and my relationships with other people. At some point I sometimes let everything just bring me down. But I've changed on my own and social emotional learning helped me! It makes me think about what I go through on a daily basis, and the things I can change in myself. Which brings me faith because anything is possible. My life has changed for the better because of SEL. I will always learn more about it so I can have the strength and know that better things will come my way. I will continue to use it in my daily life because I need to tell myself that there will be many things that are not worth being upset about. Life should be about being happy, and enjoying every single day.
